Edinburgh Stabbing Spree Leaves Five Injured as Counter-Terrorism Police Launch Investigation

Edinburgh Stabbing Spree Leaves Five Injured

EDINBURGH, Scotland — Counter-terrorism police are investigating a series of violent stabbing incidents in Edinburgh that left five people injured and prompted a major security response across the Scottish capital.

Police Scotland confirmed that a 36-year-old white Scottish man was arrested following multiple attacks reported across different parts of the city on Friday evening. Authorities said there is currently no ongoing threat to the public, but specialist counter-terrorism officers are assisting with the investigation.

The violence began in the Sighthill area before reports emerged of additional incidents in other parts of Edinburgh, including Telford Road and Leith Walk. Five men, aged between 22 and 39, suffered injuries, with several requiring hospital treatment. Officials said none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show the suspect being restrained by police while making anti-Muslim remarks. Investigators are examining the footage as part of their inquiry. Community organizations have stated that several of the victims were Muslim, and at least some of the attacks may have occurred near or after worshippers left a local mosque.

The incident has sparked concern among local Muslim communities and prompted calls for a thorough hate-crime and terrorism investigation. Community leaders condemned the violence and urged residents to remain united against racism and religious hatred.

Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton described the events as a "shocking attack" and emphasized that there is no place for racism or faith-based hatred in Scotland. Police have increased patrols in affected areas and launched a public appeal for witnesses, photographs, videos, and other information that could assist detectives.

Authorities continue to investigate the suspect's motives, movements, and any potential extremist links. Counter-terrorism officers are working alongside local detectives and prosecutors as inquiries remain ongoing.
