Major Landslide Shuts Down Shillong–Dawki Road, Traffic Halted Beyond Laitlyngkot Village

Major Landslide Forces Closure of Shillong

SHILLONG, MEGHALAYA, INDIA — Authorities have announced the immediate closure of a section of the Shillong–Dawki Road following a major landslide that has completely cut off the roadway near Laitlyngkot village in East Khasi Hills District.

According to information released by the District Administration, the landslide occurred at Chainage 25+200 along the Shillong–Dawki Road, one of Meghalaya's most important transportation corridors connecting Shillong to the popular border town of Dawki.

Road Completely Cut Off

Officials confirmed that the landslide has caused a complete blockage of the road ahead of the main Laitlyngkot village, making the route unsafe for both public and vehicular movement.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has informed authorities that extensive repair and restoration work will be required before the road can be reopened.

Road Closure Announced

The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District issued an advisory stating that the affected stretch of the Shillong–Dawki Road will remain closed with immediate effect.

The closure applies to all public and vehicular traffic traveling beyond Laitlyngkot village and will remain in force until further notice from the District Administration.

Residents, tourists, commercial transport operators, and other road users have been urged to comply with the restrictions for safety reasons.

Restoration Work Expected to Take Several Days

NHIDCL officials have indicated that repair and restoration efforts are expected to take several days due to the extent of the damage caused by the landslide.

Heavy machinery and engineering teams are expected to be deployed to clear debris, stabilize the affected area, and restore safe passage along the route.

Authorities will continue to assess ground conditions before determining when traffic can safely resume.

Impact on Travel and Tourism

The Shillong–Dawki Road serves as a key route for tourists visiting Dawki, known for its crystal-clear Umngot River and scenic landscapes. The closure is likely to impact travel plans, transportation services, and local businesses that rely on traffic along the route.

Officials are advising travelers to postpone non-essential journeys through the affected area until road conditions improve.

Public Advisory Issued

The District Administration has urged the public to avoid traveling beyond Laitlyngkot village during the closure period and to monitor official government updates regarding road restoration progress.

Motorists are encouraged to follow alternative routes where available and cooperate with traffic management personnel deployed in the region.

Authorities continue to monitor the landslide area while restoration efforts are being planned and executed. Additional updates regarding reopening timelines and road conditions are expected in the coming days.
