Boat Fire Near Alcatraz Island Leaves One Dead,

SAN FRANCISCO, California: A major emergency unfolded in San Francisco Bay after a passenger boat caught fire near Alcatraz Island, leaving one person dead, several others injured, and prompting a massive rescue operation involving the U.S. Coast Guard, San Francisco Fire Department, and other emergency agencies.

Authorities said 19 people were aboard the vessel when flames suddenly broke out while it was traveling through the waters west of Alcatraz Island. Thick smoke quickly engulfed the boat, forcing passengers to abandon the vessel and jump into the bay as firefighters and rescue crews raced to the scene.

Emergency responders rescued at least 15 people from the water, while several victims suffered injuries ranging from minor burns to more serious medical conditions. One person was pronounced dead following the incident. Officials have not yet released the victim's identity as authorities continue notifying family members.

Helicopter footage from the scene showed the damaged boat partially submerged before eventually sinking beneath the surface. Multiple rescue boats surrounded the area as divers and Coast Guard crews searched the water for anyone who might still be missing. The search-and-rescue operation remained active for several hours after the fire was brought under control.

Survivors were taken to shore, where paramedics provided immediate medical treatment before transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Officials praised the rapid response of emergency teams, saying their quick actions helped prevent a higher loss of life.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the fire. Marine safety experts will inspect the wreckage once conditions allow, while eyewitness accounts and evidence collected from the scene are expected to play a key role in the investigation.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about boating safety in San Francisco Bay, one of the busiest waterways on the U.S. West Coast. Authorities are urging boat operators to ensure vessels are equipped with functioning fire extinguishers, emergency communication devices, and enough life jackets for every passenger.

Officials say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details—including the cause of the fire and the final number of casualties—will be released as they become available
