Major Fire Breaks Out at Marseille's Old Port

Marseille, France: A major fire broke out at the Vieux-Port (Old Port) in Marseille on Saturday morning, engulfing several boats moored along the waterfront and triggering a large-scale emergency response.

According to preliminary reports, at least two vessels caught fire, with some boats reportedly sinking as firefighters battled the flames. Authorities have not yet confirmed the full extent of the damage, and investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing.

Massive Emergency Response

More than 150 marine firefighters were deployed to the scene to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby vessels and port facilities. Thick smoke was seen rising above the historic harbor as emergency crews worked to bring the situation under control.

Emergency responders remained at the scene for several hours as firefighting operations continued.

Injuries Reported

Officials said 14 people received medical attention following the incident. While authorities have not released detailed information about the severity of the injuries, emergency medical teams treated those affected at the scene and transported some individuals for further care if required.

No fatalities have been reported at this stage.

Access Restricted Around the Port

Authorities established a security perimeter around the affected area, closing access to Quai du Port while emergency operations continued. Residents, tourists, and visitors were urged to avoid the area to allow firefighters and rescue teams to work safely.

Maritime shuttle services operating through the Old Port were temporarily suspended because of the emergency response.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Investigators are expected to examine the damaged vessels once the fire is fully extinguished and the area is declared safe.

Officials are continuing to assess structural damage to the boats and nearby port infrastructure.

Authorities Urge Public to Follow Safety Instructions
