Multiple Arrests After Early-Morning Crash

Washington, D.C., USA – A late-night crash near the World War II Memorial on Independence Avenue SW resulted in multiple arrests early Monday after a driver allegedly crashed into a light pole while under the influence, according to the U.S. Park Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:48 a.m., when officers responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash near the memorial. Upon arriving at the scene, police found that a Kia sedan had struck a lamp post with enough force to rip off its front right wheel.

According to the U.S. Park Police, the driver—who was the sole occupant of the crashed vehicle—was not injured in the collision. Officers arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).

Before police arrived, two individuals from a separate, uninvolved vehicle had stopped to assist the driver following the crash. However, during the investigation, officers allegedly discovered illegal drugs in their possession. Both individuals were subsequently arrested on drug possession charges.

Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a woman and a man being placed into a U.S. Park Police transport van around 1:30 a.m. Authorities later clarified that the driver of the crashed vehicle was arrested for DUI, while the two individuals from the second vehicle were taken into custody for drug-related offenses.

During the response, officers were also observed conducting field sobriety tests (FSTs) at the scene. Several empty beer bottles and unopened cases of beer were reportedly visible near another vehicle; however, authorities have not linked those items to any additional criminal charges or confirmed their connection to the incident.

The crash caused damage to the lamp post, but no other injuries were reported. Authorities have not released the identities of those arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The U.S. Park Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and the related arrests. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
