Uganda School Bus Tragedy Leaves 21 Dead After Bus Overturns in Kapchorwa District
Kapchorwa District, Uganda – A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, including 20 schoolchildren and one adult, after a school bus overturned while returning from an educational excursion in eastern Uganda on the night of Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The victims were pupils from King David Junior School, located in Ndejje, Kampala, who had spent the day visiting the famous Sipi Falls as part of a school study tour. The journey home turned tragic when the bus crashed along the steep and winding Chekwatit Hill in Kapchorwa District.
Authorities confirmed that the only adult fatality was Mr. Tadeo Ssekade, the founder and director of King David Junior School. His death, alongside those of the young students, has left families, classmates, and the wider Ugandan community in deep mourning.
According to preliminary findings released by the Uganda Police Force, investigators believe the crash was caused by a mechanical failure. The Isuzu school bus reportedly suffered a fault while descending the notorious hill, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Witnesses and emergency responders said the bus veered violently off the roadway before crashing into a massive roadside rock. The force of the collision caused the vehicle to overturn multiple times, ripping the roof completely off the bus and leaving the passengers trapped inside the wreckage.
Rescue teams, police officers, and local residents rushed to the crash scene in an effort to save survivors. Several injured passengers were pulled from the wreckage and transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Officials have not yet released the exact number of those injured, but many are believed to be in serious condition.
The crash has once again raised concerns over road safety in Uganda, particularly on mountainous routes known for steep descents and dangerous curves. Chekwatit Hill has long been regarded as one of the region's most hazardous stretches of road, with previous accidents highlighting the risks posed by mechanical failures and difficult driving conditions.
Government officials have expressed condolences to the grieving families and pledged a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Authorities are expected to examine the vehicle's maintenance records, braking system, and compliance with transport safety regulations to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Education leaders and members of the public have also called for stricter safety inspections for school transport vehicles, arguing that stronger enforcement could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As Uganda mourns the heartbreaking loss of dozens of young lives, communities across the country are remembering the children who left home for what was meant to be an educational adventure but never returned.
