At Least Five Dead, 41 Missing After Passenger Ship Catches Fire Off Indonesia's Madura Island
Sumenep Regency, Indonesia: A devastating fire aboard the passenger ship KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 has left at least five people dead and 41 others missing after the vessel caught fire in the Java Sea near Madura Island on Sunday. Rescue teams are continuing a large-scale search operation as authorities work to locate those still unaccounted for.
According to Indonesian authorities, the ferry was carrying 271 people, including 232 passengers and 39 crew members, on a scheduled voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire broke out several hours into the journey. The ship's captain reported the blaze before communication with the vessel was lost.
Emergency response teams, assisted by the Indonesian Navy, nearby vessels, and rescue boats, rushed to the scene after receiving distress calls. Dramatic videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke billowing from the ferry as flames spread across its upper decks. Passengers wearing life jackets were seen gathering at the bow of the ship, while others jumped into the sea in an attempt to escape the fire.
Officials said 225 people have been rescued, while the bodies of five victims have been recovered. However, 41 people remain missing, and search operations continue despite challenging sea conditions. Authorities also noted that inaccurate passenger manifests have complicated efforts to determine the exact number of people still unaccounted for.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Investigators will examine the vessel after rescue operations conclude to identify what triggered the blaze and whether any safety failures contributed to the disaster.
