Nepal-China Border Flash Floods Kill at Least 160, Hundreds Missing as Rescue Operations Continue
A catastrophic flash flood in the Himalayan border region of Nepal and China has killed at least 160 people and left hundreds of tourists, workers, security personnel and local residents missing. The disaster swept through communities along the Bhotekoshi River on Wednesday, August 26, destroying homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure and bringing travel in parts of the region to a standstill.
The initial reports on Wednesday put the combined death toll at 98, including 95 deaths reported by Nepal and three in China's Tibet region. As rescue teams continued searching affected areas, the reported toll rose sharply. Nepal later reported 157 deaths, while Chinese authorities reported three deaths in the Gyirong area, taking the combined toll to at least 160.
Bhotekoshi River Swells Suddenly
The disaster began when the Bhotekoshi River flooded at around 9 a.m. Wednesday, sending a powerful surge of water and debris through communities in northern Nepal.
Several villages were badly damaged, while roads, bridges and hydropower facilities were swept away or buried under mud and debris. Authorities warned people living near the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers to stay away from riverbanks as the danger remained high.
The worst-hit areas included Rasuwa, along with parts of Nuwakot and Dhading. The mountainous terrain and extensive infrastructure damage have made rescue operations particularly difficult.
Hundreds of Tourists and Foreign Nationals Missing
The disaster has also raised major concerns for travelers in the region.
Nepalese authorities reported hundreds of people missing, including large numbers of foreign nationals. Many were traveling toward Tibet for the Kailash Manasarovar pilgrimage, while others were tourists, trekking groups, workers and local residents.
Earlier reports identified hundreds of missing foreign nationals, including people from India, the United States, Australia, Britain and Canada. At least 28 Nepalese police personnel were also reported missing.
The scale of the missing-person reports remains fluid because communications have been disrupted and many roads and bridges have been destroyed.
China’s Tibet Region Also Hit
The flooding was not limited to Nepal.
Across the border in China's Tibet region, a mudslide struck Gyirong County, causing deaths and leaving hundreds missing. Infrastructure and communications were also severely affected in the border area.
The Bhotekoshi River originates on the Tibetan side of the Himalayas before flowing into Nepal, meaning a disaster upstream can rapidly affect communities downstream.
What Caused the Disaster?
Initial reports suggested that an avalanche or major landslide involving ice and rock triggered the sudden surge.
Later assessments pointed toward a glacial collapse or ice-and-rock avalanche as the likely trigger. The U.S. Geological Survey also identified a significant landslide in the area around the time of the disaster. Authorities and experts are continuing to investigate the exact chain of events.
The sudden nature of the event left little time for people in some communities to escape.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Wednesday following the disaster.
Modi conveyed his condolences over the loss of lives and said that India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal. He also reaffirmed that India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance, with Indian teams coordinating with Nepalese authorities on rescue and relief operations.
India has also been closely involved in efforts concerning missing Indian nationals, including pilgrims and other travelers caught in the disaster.
Rescue Operations Underway
Nepalese authorities have launched extensive search-and-rescue operations involving security forces and emergency personnel.
However, the destruction of roads and bridges, difficult Himalayan terrain, damaged communication networks and continuing flood risks are complicating the response.
Authorities continue to warn residents and travelers to avoid riverbanks and affected areas while rescue teams search for missing people.
